The European Commission is required to monitor the process of liberalization of national energy markets in Europe to create an Internal Energy Market. Country reports provide the basis to evaluate the status of each national liberalization. In this context, E Bridge was part of the project team preparing the country profiles for the 2014. E-Bridge was responsible for conducting the country reports of Germany, Austria, Belgium and Denmark.
Country profiles analyze the major changes in recent years in both the national electricity and gas markets. Besides the description of the general regulatory framework for the implementation of the third energy package (including independence of the national regulatory authority and unbundling of the national network operators) the reports show the developments of competition and price levels in both the wholesale and retail markets. Furthermore, the country profiles contain information on consumer behavior e.g. regarding supplier switching rate, as well information about the electricity and gas grid. In particular, security of supply, bottlenecks in the grid and expansion projects play a major role in improving the integration of national markets.
In the analysis publications of national regulatory authorities and statistics of the Commission are primarily used to ensure comparability across countries. This is complemented by specific national expertise of the consultants for latest developments. The national country reports are published by the European Commission.
The discussion about ensuring sufficient security of supply in the electrical energy industry is becoming increasingly important.
