Dr. Jan von Appen

von Appen, Jan_2Jan von Appen focuses on investment decisions in decentralized energy and storage systems and data-driven business models in the energy industry. Jan has led numerous national and international projects focusing on decentralized energy systems, energy management and grid integration. His clients included international system operators, Dax corporations and governments.

Prior to joining E-Bridge, Jan headed the business unit “Decentralized Energy Management” at the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy Systems (formerly IWES) in Kassel, Germany. Here, he developed investment models and software solutions for the optimal integration of electro-mobility and prosumer systems in existing energy infrastructures.

Jan studied business administration in combination with electrical engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt and holds a doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Kassel. In addition, he was a visiting scholar at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, USA, and at CSIRO in Newcastle, Australia.

René Beune

rene-beune-imageRené Beune, Principal Consultant at E-Bridge Consulting B.V., has more than 30 years’ experience in the energy sector. Among others, René has practical experience in system and network planning, system operations as well as in wholesale markets and market integration.

His solid knowledge of technical, economical and operational relationships is the basis for his practical and implementation-oriented advice for TSOs, power exchanges and regulatory authorities.

René has played a major role in or was responsible for several studies and projects in the international electricity business. He has more than 10 years of experience as a leader of complex studies in research and development, policy development, generation planning, balancing market design and market development and congestion management concepts.

Additionally he convened several international project groups, working groups and studies.

René received his M. Sc. in Applied Mathematics/Operations Research at Twente Technical University in 1981.

Kilian Bienert

Bienert, Kilian_2Kilian Bienert deals with issues of network planning and grid operation in the area of distribution grids. His work focuses on the integration of decentralized generation units and the exploration of new flexibility options in the course of increasing digitization and electrification. As part of his studies, he acquired extensive expertise in both the technical aspects of electrical energy systems and the economic and regulatory aspects of energy supply.

In his work as a student assistant and as a bachelor and master at the Institute of Electrical Systems and Energy Economics (IAEW) at the RWTH Aachen University, Kilian also dealt with the regionalization of decentralized generation plants and electrical consumers.

Kilian studied electrical energy engineering at the RWTH Aachen University.

Steffen Boche

steffen-boche-imageIn his consulting, Steffen Boche is able to draw on almost 20 years of energy-sector experience. He has both extensive business-management expertise and practical management experience. His primary focuses in operational regulation management include management-oriented studies of network-relevant issues. In such work, he covers a wide range of topics, including network-fee calculation, modeling of the impacts of incentive-based regulation on earnings maximization and assessment of investment decisions.

At E-Bridge, Steffen also supports utilities in identifying cost-cutting potential and in selecting strategic options for cost-shifting. In addition, his tasks include assessing electricity and gas networks in conjunction with concessions and network acquisitions.

Prior to joining E-Bridge, he held a range of management positions at Verbundnetz Gas AG. Steffen studied at the University of Rostock.

Steffen is certified PRINCE2® project manager.

Dr.-Ing. Jens Büchner

buechner-480x320Jens Büchner, Managing Director of E-Bridge Consulting GmbH, has worked in the energy sector for more than 23 years. His extensive international experience, his solid grasp of technical and operational interrelationships and his understanding of complex economic and regulatory issues give him a broad foundation for consulting oriented to actual practice and implementation. He advises regulatory authorities and utilities in connection with complex, sensitive issues requiring both technical know-how and implementation-based experience.

Analytical expertise, along with many years of experience with virtually all of the international energy sector’s key management issues, qualify Jens as a consultant for sensitive – and technically and economically challenging – tasks.

During his consulting career, he has played a key role in development of access regulations for electricity and gas markets, successfully supported major acquisition and merger projects in Europe and directed a range of management and cost-effectiveness studies.

Jens holds a doctoral degree from RWTH Aachen University.

Tjacka Bus

tjacka-bus-imageTjacka Bus began his work at E-Bridge in January 2012. He has gained his professional experience especially in the areas of energy production, energy trading and data management.

Tjacka has managed projects in the areas of analysis and improvement of accounting grid management, design and implementation of data-management processes and optimization of complex processes relative to network economics and sales. In addition, Tjacka has established and filled ad-interim positions for function managers and data managers in the energy-trading sector. Furthermore, his past work has covered areas such as IT security of invoicing processes.

Tjacka worked for over three years in the Dutch energy sector, and thus he has a first-hand knowledge of that sector’s processes and systems.
Prior to becoming a consultant, Mr. Bus worked for five years in the area of solid-state physics and conducted research into materials for innovative energy systems and semiconductor applications.

Tjacka studied nuclear engineering at the University of California (Berkeley) and materials science at Delft University of Technology.

 

Susanne Dornick

susanne-dornick-imageSusanne Dornick has worked in the energy sector for more than 10 years and has been with E-Bridge since January 2014. Her main work emphases include European power market design, cross-border market integration, generation and energy trading. She also supports transmission network operators in the areas of balancing, market integration and IT-project management and implementation.

Susanne’s current work focus is on project management. Among others she supports 17 transmission system operators and 5 power exchanges in the introduction and development of a single intraday electricity market in Northwest Europe. Before joining E-Bridge she was employed as Regulatory Expert at E.ON Global Commodities for 4.5 years. Before that Susanne worked as a Key Account Manager for Balancing Contracts and as Project Manager for the European Regional Initiatives at TenneT TSO in Germany.

While working at TenneT TSO she was more than two years project manager for the establishment of a joint subsidiary (CAO – Central Allocation Office) in cooperation with seven other TSOs. The project included the conceptual elaboration of the auction design, the contractual arrangement between the TSOs and the creation of the auction rules, the tender for the system software including contracting of the provider and the overall budget responsibility.

Susanne is certified PRINCE2® project manager.

 

Bart Franken

Franken_Bart_01Bart Franken is an electrical power engineer working as a consultant for electricity network operators, energy sector regulators and generators in many countries.

Bart gained experience in all power system aspects when he was a member of the Management Team of Dutch electricity transmission operator ‘Transportnet Zuid-Holland’ (TZH). At TZH he was directly responsible for the control centre department, transmission system development planning and regulatory affairs.

Since 2002, Bart has been working as an independent consultant. As a consultant, he is using his in-depth power systems knowledge in different projects that are mainly related to (transmission} system operations, regulation and electricity markets.

Specific areas of interest are Quality Regulation, Ancillary Services markets, System Operation and incident investigations.

Janis Kaltschnee

Janis Kaltschnee deals with strategic questions regarding market design, new trends and regulatory issues. At E-Bridge he mainly focuses on “Wholesale Markets”, supporting clients like network operators, utilities and international investors. In different projects he analyzed the potential of the rising share of renewables for various market participants.

Through his internship at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy in Berlin, Janis gained a close insight into a regulatory authority. During his time at 50Hertz, he focused on the future role of a transmission grid company. He worked on strategic questions with regard to an electricity system with a high share of renewable generation and its opportunities.

Janis studied Energy Management at the University of Applied Science Darmstadt (Bachelor). His master program was  Renewable Energy Management at University of Applied Science Cologne.

Dr. Bernard Kryszak

Dr. Bernard Kryszak has been active in the energy and IT sectors for many years. Kryszak, Bernard_2
Prior to joining E-Bridge in 2019, he gained over 20 years of valuable experience with transmission system operators, energy companies and an international energy network consultancy and IT consultancy.

Bernard’s main areas of expertise are in the power market design, in the technical and economic areas of transmission networks, the system and market integration of renewable energies, in project management and in process and IT consulting. In particular, he steered national and international projects with transmission system operators and energy companies with many stakeholders and successfully accompanied them with specialist expertise.

Bernard studied electrical engineering at the TU Berlin and earned his doctorate at the UMIST Manchester.

Dr. Zongyu Liu

Profil_LiuZongyu Liu, Senior Consultant at E-Bridge Consulting B.V., has been involved with the energy sector for more than 6 years. He has extensive experience from various EU projects which he conducted during his work at the Technical University of Delft (Netherlands) in cooperation with leading manufacturers of network systems, transmission system operators and leading technical universities in Europe. His expertise in the fields of system modelling, stochastic modelling of the infeed of renewable energies, modelling and optimisation outstandingly qualifies Zongyu to support the E-Bridge team.

Zongyu studied electrical engineering at the Chalmers Technology University (Sweden) and electrical engineering and IT at the McMaster University (Canada).

Ivan Marjanovic

IMG_0008During his five-year doctoral studies at the Institute of Energy Systems and Energy Economics (IAEW) in Aachen, Ivan Marjanovic gained work experience as a consultant and project manager in projects for ministries, transmission system operators and other industrial partners. His main areas of expertise include congestion management in the transmission grid, grid planning, power generation and electricity markets.

In his diploma thesis, Ivan focused on the assessment of flow-based capacity calculation models taking into account uncertainties. According to this research topic, he has extensive expertise in modeling uncertainties relevant to the operation of a power grid as well as conducting risk analyzes and stochastic optimization.

Ivan studied electrical engineering at the University of Belgrade and the RWTH Aachen University.

David Myška

david-myska-imageDavid Myška has worked in the energy sector more than 14 years and is with E-Bridge since July 2016. His work is mostly linked to European power market design and cross-border market integration.

Before joining E-Bridge, David worked as COO at Joint Allocation Office created by the merger of CAO Central Allocation Office and CASC, capacity auction offices providing services to 20 TSOs. Prior to the merger he was employed as Business Development and Contracts Manager at CAO. While working at CAO, David was convener of 8 CEE TSOs Working Group for 5 years dealing with cross-border capacity auction rules, auction office processes and CEE cross-border market design. He was also the moderator of the ENTSO-E drafting team for 2 years, which successfully prepared harmonized European rules for forward cross-border capacity allocation. At CAO, David was in addition responsible for all contractual arrangements with TSOs, market participants and IT services providers, including respective budget aspects.

Prior to this, he worked at ČEPS, being responsible for cross-border trade and contracts for purchase of ancillary services and representing the Czech TSO in various international projects.

David studied power engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague.

 

Dr. Vigen Nikogosian

Vigen Nikogosian has more than 10 years of experience in the electricity and gas industry. He advised public authorities, such as ministries and regulators, as well as energy firms in a wide range of energy market issues. His comprehensive and profound knowledge of industrial economics makes him an expert for issues in the areas of competition, wholesale markets and network regulation. Vigen conducted several studies analyzing price setting behavior, questions regarding network separation and vertical integration issues, as well as market integration of renewable energies.

He was an economics policy advisor and researcher at the Centre for European Economic Research before joining E-Bridge.

Vigen studied economics at the University of Hohenheim and holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management.

Vigen is certified PRINCE2® practitioner.

Oliver Obert

obert-lgOliver Obert has been working in the energy industry for 14 years and is successfully working as a consultant at E-Bridge since 2008. He focuses on project management as well as on business process and IT consultancy. Due to his many successful project activities in recent years, Oliver has extensive experience in the field of business process analysis.

He successfully supported these projects as project manager and technical expert.

In a currently ongoing project Oliver supports an international TSO in the definition and implementation of various business processes in the field of capacity management and security of supply. He has also completed an extensive business process and IT analysis for a major German gas TSO to optimize the process chains from capacity management to billing

In past projects focussing on business processes, he supported a utility company in the definition and optimization of business processes as well as in the specification and implementation of a new IT system for power plant use optimization and tertiary reserve marketing. In another project, Oliver has successfully assisted this client in a comprehensive business process and IT analysis for all gas processes.

Furthermore, Oliver supports the four Nordic TSOs as technical expert in the modelling of business processes to implement the Flow-Based approach in the Nordic region. As part of the TSC project he was involved in the definition / modelling and implementation of business and IT processes (including common business processes in the area of operational planning i.e. day-ahead and intraday congestion forecast DACF and IDCF).

Prior joining E-Bridge, he worked for the DSO of the public utility company of the city on Munich for almost 3 years at the department for grid economy. Before that, Oliver worked for the TSO E.ON Netz for 5 years in the grid contract management.

Oliver Obert is a certified PRINCE2 project manager. He studied at the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences.

 

Dr. Baris Özalay

Baris Özalay has more than 5 years of experience in the electrical energy industry and research. He worked in national and international projects for generation companies, TSOs and DSOs with a wide range of topics, for example in modeling and analysis of a sustainable global development with an integrated assessment Model.

Baris has expertise in mainly all technical field of the electrical energy industry such as generation development, transmission and distribution networks. One of his main fields of expertise is the planning of future power generation structures and the integration of Renewable Energy Sources. Through his research topic about the analysis of future power generation structures with a multi-period, multi-objective expansion model he deeply discussed the future development of generation structures.

Baris holds a doctoral degree from RWTH Aachen University. He has studied industrial engineering at the RWTH Aachen and has worked afterwards in the Research Department “Sustainable Transmission Systems” at the Institute for High Voltage Technology (IFHT).

Dr. Pieter Schavemaker

Profil_SchavemakerDr. Pieter Schavemaker, Principal Consultant of E-Bridge Consulting B.V., has worked in the energy sector for 18 years. Pieter’s varied experiences as assistant professor at the Delft University of Technology, with a large manufacturer of power system equipment, with a Transmission System Operator and as a consultant, make him a reliable resource for E-Bridge and our clients.

Amongst Pieter’s strengths are his strong analytical skills combined with his ability to explain complex matters in an understandable way, his broad experience in convening and facilitating workgroups in a multi-cultural and multi-stakeholder environment and his profound project/program management skills.

Pieter is a consultant able to deal with both in-depth studies on the one hand, as well as complex projects on the other.

During the past years, Pieter was heavily involved in the international work on the boundary between system operations and the electricity market. Pieter is one of the founding fathers of the CWE Flow-based Market Coupling that is currently being implemented.

Pieter Schavemaker is author of the book ‘Electrical Power System Essentials’, published by John Wiley & Sons.

Pieter holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Power Systems from Delft University of Technology.

Dr. Henning Schuster

henning-schuster-image Henning Schuster leads the “DSO” division at E-Bridge Consulting, advising distribution system operators as well as transmission system operators, ministries, and government institutions with regard to current issues and key topics. These include not only strategic positioning and business models for companies, but also technical solutions in asset management and grid operation.

Henning Schuster previously led the Research Group for Network Planning and Network Operation at the Institute of Power Systems and Power Economics (IAEW), where he gained experience in energy economics and industry research. He served as project staff and project leader in national and international projects for power plant operators, grid operators, ministries, and government institutions.

Henning has an established technical, economic, and strategic understanding of the interactions in the energy industry. He can combine his technical expertise with knowledge of market mechanisms, as well as economic and strategic competence to meet the demands of all challenges. His broad knowledge base and analytical approach qualifies him as a consultant for complex and sensitive issues.

Tuncay Türkucar

Tuncay knows how to implement market and regulatory technical standards in practical shape in business strategies and processes. For example, he was involved in the evaluation and implementation of liberalized markets in Germany and the Netherlands.

Tuncay is currently advising transmission system operators in strategic projects. This concerns both the support for the strategic positioning, optimization of business processes as well as in the applications. His technical and organizational knowledge enables Tuncay to support market participants in the evaluation and selection of appropriate commercial and technical systems to improve competitiveness and achieve cost savings potential.

In the past 15 years, Tuncay has advised numerous German and European transmission system operators in the evaluation, documentation and development of business processes, the development of organization and cooperation models and the development of technical and operational strategies in the areas of system management, system services, congestion management and the medium and long term planning.

Tuncay studied at Technische Universität Dortmund.

 

Dr. Tobias Veith

profil_tobias_veith_03Tobias Veith joined the E-Bridge team in November 2011 and focuses on topics of European market design, regulation and competition and cross-border trade.

In previous projects, Tobias worked for different European TSOs, NRAs and producers with dedicated experience as an economic expert for market design and auctions. He has specific knowledge in the fields of control and balancing energy markets in Western European countries (CWE), Ireland and the UK as well as in the Nordics. Beyond, Tobias is working on topics of RES integration into the current energy system and models for integrating intermittents into control energy markets. Based on his practical experience, Tobias regularly publishes in academic journals on these topics.

Before E-Bridge, Tobias was a project manager and research fellow at the Center for European Economic Research (ZEW), Mannheim, Germany. He primarily participated in projects on regulation and competition issues for the German government and for European enterprises.

Since February 2014, Tobias is also Professor of Energy Economics at the University of Applied Sciences Rottenburg, Germany.

Matthias Wessels

The focus of his practical and scientific activities were previously the agent-based market simulation, the macroeconomic evaluation of the geographical allocation of renewable energies in Germany, the analysis of the needs for flexibility and its coverage in the German power plant fleet in the light of a rising share of renewable energies in electricity production as well as the model-based analysis of network expansion needs on distribution network level.

During his studies Matthias has worked as a research assistant at RWTH Aachen University on projects for public clients and was employed as an intern student, dealing with the software-based imaging distribution operations of power companies in the Soptim AG.

Matthias studied industrial engineering at RWTH Aachen University.

He is certified PRINCE2® project manager.
